AAU was founded in 1974, and since then it has evolved into a dynamic, innovative and internationally oriented research and educational institution with campuses in Aalborg, Esbjerg and Copenhagen. AAU is committed to problem based learning, interdisciplinary and research based innovation.
The University has four faculties: the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Science and the Faculty of Medicine. Furthermore, the University includes the Danish Building Research Institute (DBI).
In 2014 the University had more than 20,000 students, 3,200 external research projects and a turnover of DKK 2.7 billion.
AAU is a member of European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) and therefore, AAU works hard to ensure an innovative university culture by:
- Developing and implementing new learning and research methods
- Experimenting with new management techniques
- Forstering an internationally oriented staff
- Offering quality education with a European perspective
The universities within the ECIU are characterized by a strong sense of entrepreneurship and have close contact with industry and regional institutions.
In October 2015, AAU jumped from number approx. 375 to 225 on Times Higher Education ranking. The primary reason was due to an increase in number of citations, from number 387 to 208 in the world. AAU is on the so called QS ranking number 356 in the world. And AAU is ranked as number 4 among Danish Universities.
