Tradition and renewal in Copenhagen
The 7th international Art of Management and Organization conference in Copenhagen are deeply embedded in and pays tribute to the great tradition of the Art of Management and Organization (AoMO) former conferences and activities. Simultaneously, the conference in Copenhagen develops and renews the tradition of AoMO in order for the conference to stay alive and develop in an exquisite combination of reproduction and transformation.

The tradition is kept amongst others by sticking to the format of the conference both traditional and untraditional with papers presentations, performances, event, exhibitions, workshops, where the tradition of AoMO is already quite unique. Still the AoMo conference at Copenhagen Business School (CSB) in Copenhagen August 2014 intents to and will renew and add to this tradition in a number of ways (see “Keynotes and events” and “Programme” for more specific information).

A short historical view
The cradle of The Art of Management and Organization Conference (AoMO) was London 2002 from there it went to Paris (2004), Krakow (2006), in 2008 the conference left its base in Europe for the first time and were placed in the beautiful surroundings of Banff (Canada), then there was Istanbul (2010) followed by a revitalization of the conference in York (UK) 2012.

In 2014 Scandinavia will host the conference for the very first time, as The seventh Art of Management and Organization Conference will takes place at Copenhagen Business School in the Danish capital. Copenhagen is a city where old and new is intertwined, and where the possibilities for sightseeing, exploration and discovery are almost infinite.Copenhagen Business School is placed very close to the center of the city and to a number of interesting places showing how diverse and cosy the city is.

A community of praxis
The Art of Management and Organization Conference has through its history of conferences and related activities managed to create a community of praxis where playfulness and seriousness goes hand in hand to lay down new paths and gain new knowledge and sparkle new ideas and creativity. It is a community where scholars, artists and practitioners are integrated in the common endeavour to explore, enrich and expand the interrelationship between art, management and organization. The 2014 AoMO conference at CBS in Copenhagen works to both withhold and expand this community of praxis and the essentials of it.

Design of Creativity and Creative Design
The theme of the conference is “Creativity and Design”. Creativity to keep the continuity of the conference as creativity has always been both a theme and a characteristic of the Art of Management and Organization Conference. At the same time the 2014 conference likes to highlight design, and the interrelation between creativity and design. The interrelation to focus upon both the design of creativity, as some kind of structure often is needed to sparkle or create creativity (e.g. the Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier), and the creative design to underline that the idea of design is not purely rational but also a creative process in arts, industries and organizations.

The design of design as part of the conference theme has at least the following four purposes:

1. Show how creativity and design can be and often is two sides of the same coin (see above).

2. Display the diversity of design going from structural design (e.g. Mintzberg, 1983) over improvisation where the interplay between structure and improvisation is highlighted (e.g. Kamoche et.al., 2002) and to seeing design as process (e.g. Weick, 2001).

3. Encourage some of the industries and individuals within and researching them to become a more visible part of the Art of Management and Organization Conference and community. It could be industries such as: Architecture, fashion and furniture.

4. Relate to the place of the conference: Denmark and Danish Design (e.g. Fashion, food, furniture, and porcelain).
