Welcome to Helsingør!
On behalf of the Local Organizing and Scientific Committees, we would like to wish you a warm welcome to the coastal city of Helsingør (aka Elsinore in English) for the 5th International Workshop on Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances - PFAS. We are proud that we managed to put together an excellent scientific programme for this 3-day event, including an in-depth mini-workshop on Sunday 27th. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we have been able to invite some of the world’s leading experts on PFASs from a range of scientific disciplines. We look forward to hearing about some of the latest developments in this exciting field of research from our invited and many other expert oral and poster presenters. We are delighted that the workshop will be well attended with about 170 participants registered at the time of writing.
The main sponsor of this workshop is the Nordfluor network (short name for the “Nordforsk Network for Fluorinated Compounds”), which is a researcher network financed by NordForsk (an organisation under the Nordic Council of Ministers that provides funding for Nordic research cooperation). Nordfluor aims to bring together prominent research groups working on PFASs in the Nordic and Baltic countries in order to strengthen and increase the quality of research and research training. Nordfluor comprises 22 individual research groups and approximately 100 researchers from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Most Nordfluor members will be at the meeting presenting their latest research on PFASs. The Nordfluor network has been running for over 3 years now and this event is one of the final activities of the network. In November 2013 Environmental Science and Pollution Research will publish a special issue which showcases some of the excellent PFAS research undertaken by Nordfluor members.
As a special feature we will hold a Scientific Fair on Monday 28th, where you are invited to bring printed A4 posts with ideas for projects, open positions you are advertising, your CV if you are looking for open positions, or information about funding that can be applied for. If you have questions about the Scientific Fair please contact Lisbeth E. Knudsen (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The workshop will be held at the Konventum Conference Centre and many will also be staying at the venue. If you are staying in the Helsingør area, take some time out to enjoy the North Zealand countryside and the views of neighbouring Sweden across the Sound (Øresund). Helsingør is known internationally for its castle Kronborg, where William Shakespeare's play Hamlet is set, and conference guests have the chance to visit the castle on Sunday. If you have questions about tourism in the area our volunteer, Elena Boriani (email@example.com), who lives in the area, will assist you.
Thank you in advance for attending and sharing your recent results with us. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in Helsingør.
