Although it looks like a castle, Koldingfjord did not start out as either a castle or a hotel. In 1911 it opened as a sanitarium for children suffering from tuberculosis, and the enterprise was financed from the sale of Christmas stamps.
Since 1904 these stamps have been sold each year in December and the proceeds are still used to run the Christmas Stamp Homes. Tuberculosis is not a health problem in Denmark anymore, and focus has shifted from children suffering from tuberculosis and malnourishment to children suffering from obesity and mobbing.
Every year has its own stamp and many famous Danish artists have designed Christmas stamps – among those our queen, Queen Margrethe II.
Koldingfjord is now totally renovated and serves as a hotel, a popular place for celebrating weddings and, of course, as a fully modern workshop venue with state of the art equipment
and a gourmet restaurant.
The city of Kolding
Like Koldingfjord, the city of Kolding has a long, interesting, and dramatic history.
The city was first mentioned in writing in 1231 and Koldinghus, the old castle, was built in 1268 by the king to defend the country’s southern borders.
The castle is now a museum and known internationally for its many excellent exhibitions of art, silverware, interiors, and jewelry.
Kolding itself is a modern center for commerce and industry.
